The route

How the course works

Most people who join have never fitted a camera. Over three days they learn to plan a system, fit it, set it up and pass it on to a customer.

  1. Reserve a seat

Add your name to the free waiting list, or pay a £50 deposit to hold a seat at the founding fee. Each group takes six people at most.

  2. Three workshop days

All three days are spent in the Manchester workshop, on the kind of equipment used on paid jobs, with the trainer working next to you rather than lecturing from the front.

  3. Take on your first job

You finish with a completion certificate, a guide to pricing jobs and the skills to quote and fit CCTV for a customer, plus 30 days of support from the trainer.

Who teaches it

The trainer still installs CCTV for customers

The course is taught by someone who carries out CCTV work for paying customers, not by a full-time classroom tutor.

The methods covered are the ones used on homes and business premises across Greater Manchester, so the course reflects what customers ask for today. The course is run by British Engineers, which has carried out security and engineering work across Greater Manchester for more than ten years.

Course content

What each day covers

  • Day 1: Planning and the rules

The first day sets the groundwork the next two build on. No experience is needed.

    • How CCTV systems work in practice, from four cameras on a house to a small business.
    • The UK legal points every installer needs: where cameras may go, the signage required and how data protection applies.
    • Planning a full system: choosing cameras, working out coverage and writing a quote.
    • Working out the parts list and the price, and talking a customer through the system.
Trainee setting up a dome camera at a training bench
  • Day 2: Hands-on fitting

A full day of practical work on professional-grade equipment.

    • Fixing cameras securely, running cable and terminating it neatly.
    • Checking each connection works before handing the job over.
    • Working on professional-grade equipment, with one-to-one help throughout.
Trainee fitting a camera to the ceiling while others work at computers
  • Day 3: Set-up, faults and pricing

Recorder set-up, fault-finding and the business of quoting a job.

    • Setting up a DVR or NVR: recording schedules, motion detection and secure viewing from a phone.
    • Fault-finding on rigs wired to copy problems found on real jobs.
    • Writing a quote, pricing your time and handing the system over to the customer.
Trainee holding a tablet in a training room

After the course

What you should be able to do afterwards

  • Explain how analogue, HD-over-coax and IP systems differ, and recommend the right one for a customer's property and budget.

  • Plan a system of four to eight cameras for a house or a small business, choose the kit and write an accurate quote.

  • Fix cameras securely, run and terminate cable properly, and check each connection works before the job is finished.

  • Set up a DVR or NVR with recording schedules, motion detection and secure viewing from a phone.

  • Track down and fix the faults seen most often: no picture, power supply problems and network issues.

  • Quote the job, price your labour and hand the system over in a way that earns the customer's trust.

Help & FAQs

Common questions about the course

Do I need to have worked with CCTV before?

No. The course assumes you are starting from nothing. Everything is explained from the beginning, and the small group means nobody is left behind.

Do I need to bring tools?

No. The fee covers tools, equipment and course materials. Wear something comfortable: most of each day is spent standing and working. Light refreshments are provided.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. Everyone who completes the course receives a Certificate of Completion issued by British Engineers.

Can I get my deposit back?

Yes, in full, if you cancel 14 days or more before the course starts. If you would rather move to a later group, we will arrange that wherever we can. The £50 comes off the fee, so £395 is left to pay before the course.

How big are the groups?

Six people at most, and that limit is never raised. Keeping it small means the trainer can give everyone proper time and answer every question.

Can I spread the cost?

Sometimes. Call or text us, or say so when you register, and we will reply within 24 hours to talk it through.

Where is the course held?

In our workshop in Greater Manchester. You receive the address, parking and travel details once your booking is confirmed. It can be reached by public transport, and parking is a short walk away.

Will the course get me a job?

We do not place people in jobs and we will not claim to. You leave with practical installation skills, a certificate to show for them and 30 days of support while you take on your first work. Trained security installers are in short supply in the UK, and the demand is real.
