Overview

What Professional CCTV Installation Includes

Professional CCTV installation means designing a system around your premises, installing and configuring the cameras, recorder and cabling, and showing you how to view and manage it. It starts with a survey, not a standard package.

The right system depends on what you need to see, where, and how long footage needs to be kept. Whichever CCTV installer you choose, a single-camera home system and a multi-camera commercial one follow the same steps: what changes is the number of cameras, the recording requirements and the cabling involved.

Who it is for

Homes and Businesses We Support

Homes

Home systems are usually smaller. The main decisions are which entrances and outside areas to cover, and whether you want to check the cameras from your phone.

Businesses

Business systems tend to involve more cameras and more people who need access to footage, so recording capacity and how the cameras are cabled matter more.

How we design

How We Design a CCTV System

Design comes before any equipment is chosen. Each step below feeds into the next.

  1. Survey

An engineer visits to see the premises, the entrances and the areas you want covered.

  2. Coverage plan

What each camera needs to see (a doorway, a driveway, a yard) and where it needs to be to see it.

  3. Camera selection

Camera type and resolution chosen for those views and the lighting they'll be seen in.

  4. Recorder and storage

How footage is recorded, how much is stored and for how long.

  5. Cabling and network

How each camera gets video and power, and how the system connects to your network if you want remote viewing.

  6. Written quote

The design is set out in a written quote before any work goes ahead.

  7. Installation and handover

The system is installed, configured and tested, and you're shown how to use it.

Options

Camera, Recorder and Network Options

A CCTV system is a set of choices about the cameras, the recorder and how everything is connected.

  • Cameras

The camera type and resolution are chosen for what each camera needs to see and the lighting it will be seen in.

  • Recorder and storage

The recorder stores your footage. The capacity needed depends on the number of cameras, the picture quality and how long you need to keep recordings.

  • Cabling and network

Every camera needs a route for video and power back to the recorder. That may be new cabling, existing cabling where it's suitable, or your existing network.

  • Remote viewing

Viewing live and recorded footage away from the premises, on a phone or computer, where you need it.

Buying guide

Choosing a CCTV System

Settle these before you start comparing quotes: they make quotes much easier to compare.

Decide first

  1. What do you need to see, and where: entrances, boundaries, a yard or car park?
  2. Is the main aim to deter, to identify people, or to review what happened?
  3. How long should footage be kept?
  4. Who needs to view it, and from where?

What a written quote should include

  • How many cameras, of what type, and where each one goes
  • The recorder and how much storage it has
  • Cabling and any network work
  • Installation, configuration and testing
  • What handover and support cover

Cost

CCTV Installation Cost: What Affects the Price

There is no standard price for a CCTV installation, because no two properties need the same system. The cost follows how many cameras you need, how they're specified, how footage is recorded and stored, and how much work it takes to cable and fit them. The price for your property is confirmed after a site survey and set out in a written quote.

  1. Number of cameras

Each camera adds equipment, cabling and fitting time. Covering a large site or several entrances takes more cameras than covering one.

  2. Camera specification

Higher-resolution cameras, and cameras chosen for low light or wide views, cost more than standard ones.

  3. Recorder and storage

More cameras, better picture quality and longer retention all need a bigger recorder and more storage.

  4. Cabling and network work

Long or hard-to-reach cable runs take longer than short, straightforward ones, and network-connected systems may need network work.

  5. The building and access

Camera height, wall type and how easily engineers can get to each position affect installation time.

  6. Remote viewing

Viewing footage away from the premises can affect the equipment and set-up needed.

  7. Installation scope

Adding to a suitable existing system is a different job from installing a new one throughout.

We don't quote from a headline figure. Costs are set out in a written quote once we've surveyed your property.

Comparison

Why Two CCTV Quotes Can Differ

Two quotes for the same property can be far apart without either being wrong. These are the usual reasons.

Cameras
Fewer cameras covering the key entrances
More cameras, or wider coverage of a larger site
Specification
Standard cameras for everyday lighting
Higher-resolution or low-light cameras
Storage
Shorter retention, fewer cameras recording
Longer retention or higher-quality recording
Cabling
Short, straightforward cable runs
Long runs, difficult routes or new network cabling

Help & FAQs

CCTV Installation FAQs

What does CCTV installation include?

A survey of your premises, a system design covering the cameras, recorder and cabling, a written quote, installation and configuration, testing, and a handover showing you how to view and manage the system.

What happens during a CCTV site survey?

The engineer looks at the areas you want covered and how each could be cabled, talks through camera positions and where footage will be recorded, and follows up with a written quote.

Which areas do you cover?

We install CCTV in Manchester and Greater Manchester, Huddersfield, Bolton and Liverpool.

Can you work on existing CCTV systems?

Often, yes. At the survey we look at what you already have (cameras, recorder and cabling) and tell you what can stay and what would need replacing.

What happens after the survey?

You receive a written quote. Once you're happy to go ahead we arrange the installation, and the system is tested and handed over with a walk-through of how to use it.

What support is there after installation?

At handover we show you how to view and manage your system. Support arrangements after that depend on the system installed, so ask when you enquire.
