Overview

What CCTV Repair and Servicing Involves

CCTV repair means finding out why a system has stopped working properly (a camera, the recorder, the cabling, or the connection you use to view it) repairing what's faulty, and testing that it's recording again. Servicing is the planned side: checking a system is working as it should before faults show up.

Faults have different causes, so a repair starts with diagnosis rather than a guess. Whether you need CCTV repairs after a camera has dropped out, a CCTV repair service for a recorder that has stopped recording, or CCTV servicing to check a system before it lets you down, what needs repairing, and what that will cost, is agreed with you before any work goes ahead.

Faults

CCTV Faults and Repairs We Handle

These are the categories of fault we're asked to look at. The cause of a fault isn't always where the symptom appears, which is why diagnosis comes first.

  1. Camera faults

No picture, a poor or intermittent picture, or a camera that has stopped working.

You might notice: One view that is blank, poor or keeps cutting out.

  2. Cabling faults

Damaged, loose or failing cable and connections between the cameras, their power and the recorder.

You might notice: A camera that loses picture or power on and off.

  3. Recorder faults

A recorder that isn't recording, won't start, or can't play footage back.

You might notice: Gaps in footage, or recordings that will not play.

  4. Remote viewing and connectivity faults

Being unable to view the system away from the premises, or a connection that keeps dropping out.

You might notice: A system that works on site but can't be seen from elsewhere.

The visit

What a CCTV Repair Visit Includes

What happens between reporting a fault and getting the system back to working, and where you decide.

  1. You report the problem

What isn't working, when it started, and what you've noticed: missing footage, an offline camera, a viewing error.

  2. Assessment of your system

An engineer looks at the cameras, recorder and cabling you have now.

  3. Diagnosis

Finding the cause of the fault, which may not be where the symptom appears.

  4. Repair scope and written quote

What needs repairing or replacing and what it costs, agreed with you before work starts.

  5. Repair or service work

The agreed repair or planned maintenance is carried out.

  6. Testing and handover

The system is tested to confirm it's recording and can be viewed, and you're told what was done.

Decide

Repair vs Upgrade vs Replacement

Which of these makes sense can only be confirmed once an engineer has assessed your system. These are the general signs.

  1. Repair is often enough when

    • The fault is limited to one camera, cable or connection

    • The rest of the system is recording and working as expected

    • Parts are still available for your equipment

  2. Worth discussing a bigger change when

    • Faults keep coming back or are hard to trace

    • Parts for your equipment are no longer available

    • The system no longer covers what you need it to

Servicing

CCTV Servicing and Preventative Maintenance

Servicing is for catching problems before they cost you footage, rather than after.

  1. Planned servicing visits

Scheduled visits to check that the cameras, recorder and connections are working as they should.

  2. Recording checks

Confirming that footage is being recorded and can be played back.

  3. Fault call-outs between visits

When something stops working, an engineer can assess it and confirm what's needed.

Before you agree

What to Ask Before Agreeing a CCTV Repair

A clear picture of the fault, and of what you're being quoted for, makes repairs easier to compare.

Worth having ready

  1. What's happening: no picture, missing footage, a camera offline, a viewing problem
  2. When it started, and whether anything changed before it did
  3. Roughly what equipment you have and how old it is, if you know
  4. Whether you need footage from the period the fault covers

What a repair quote should cover

  • The cause of the fault, as far as it has been diagnosed
  • The repair work, and the parts and labour involved
  • What testing follows the repair
  • Any planned servicing being offered

Cost

How CCTV Repairs Are Priced

A repair is priced on the fault in front of the engineer, so there is no fixed figure to give in advance. Once the fault is diagnosed, the price is written into a quote.

  1. The cause of the fault

A loose connection and a failed recorder are very different jobs.

  2. Parts needed

Whether anything has to be replaced, and how easily it can be sourced.

  3. Size of the system

A repair on one camera differs from tracing a fault across several.

  4. Access to the equipment

Where cameras, cabling and the recorder are affects time on site.
